For fifteen years, the corner of South 3rd Street and Logan Avenue South was a gravel lot. The city bought the old Big 5 site in 2011, and it sat. Then in June, Renton cut the ribbon on a $15 million three-site project meant to revitalize downtown and provide a multiuse arts and recreation space, and the block finally started earning its keep.
The thesis of this guide is simple. Before June 6, downtown Renton had a farmers market on Tuesdays and a scattering of restaurants that closed early. As of August 2026, there is programmed activity in a two-block radius on nearly every night of the week, and most residents haven't caught up to the new schedule yet. Here is what actually runs in August, and where to eat between events.
The Block That Changed The Equation
Three connected sites now anchor downtown. Directly across the street from Legacy Square, the newly renovated Piazza Park sits in front of the soon-to-be Renton Market, an indoor public vendor space that is taking over the Renton Pavilion Events Center. The city calls it the "hat trick." Locals will start calling it whatever sticks.
Legacy Square itself is the outdoor room. The park features a large outdoor viewing screen for World Cup matches, a soccer mini-pitch, playground space and an event lawn designed for concerts, movies and cultural programming. Construction on this piece was accelerated by a year to open ahead of the World Cup, and the Legacy Square project itself cost $5.4 million.
The programming pattern the city has settled into is worth memorizing, because it repeats every week. Gina Estep, the city's Community and Economic Development Administrator, described it plainly: "Any Friday-Saturday night beyond the World Cup will be movies on Friday night. Concerts on Saturday night. We have family fun days on Sundays. Basically, we're going to have this square activated with things for people to do."
That is the change. A predictable weekly cadence in a downtown that did not have one.
Tuesdays Still Belong To The Farmers Market
The market is the elder statesman of downtown programming. For 25 seasons, the Renton Farmers Market has brought local farmers, fresh food, and friendly people together in the heart of the city. This year's run is Tuesdays, 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., June 2 through September 29, 2026, and it now sets up at Piazza Park at 233 Burnett Ave South, one block from where it was last year.
The move matters. Piazza Park sits directly across from Legacy Square, so a Tuesday afternoon shop rolls naturally into an evening on the square's event lawn. Ten-hour free parking is available at Renton's City Center Parking Garage with entry on 2nd Street, which is the practical answer to the question every returning shopper is asking.
If you have kids, the Master Gardeners and the Kid's Patch both run the full 3-to-7 window. If you don't, come at 5:30 and eat dinner from a food vendor while a musician plays. That is the whole thing.
Fridays Are Movies. Saturdays Are Concerts.
Here is the August cadence at Legacy Square as it stands:

- Saturday, Aug 1, 5:30 p.m. — Summer Concert: BeatleConcert

- Sundays — Summer Sundays series (yoga, cultural festivals, family programming)
Two of those deserve a closer look. Clinton Fearon on August 8 is the kind of booking that would have gone to a Seattle venue a year ago. The Wine & Art Block Party on the 22nd is a midday event, which is unusual for the square and worth noting if you have out-of-town guests visiting that weekend.
The Sunday series is the sleeper. The R-ALL Multicultural Festival, presented in partnership with the Mongolian Cultural Center, includes a multicultural marketplace featuring artisans, cultural organizations, educational exhibits, and community resources with authentic food and live entertainment throughout the day. And Sunset Yoga led by Be Yoga runs 60 minutes and blends yoga, Pilates, and strength training into a full-body movement class. Both are free.
The One-Off Dates To Block Off
Two events in the first week of August require calendar space and neither of them is at Legacy Square.
The Renton Chamber's 2026 Renton Foodies Walking Tour runs Thursday, August 6, a delicious evening exploring Downtown Renton's favorite local flavors, hidden gems, and gathering places. This is the shortcut for anyone who has been meaning to try five downtown spots and never gets past their default. The Chamber follows it the next night with the 2026 Summer Happy Hour at the Chamber on Friday, August 7, with local beer and wine, rotating house cocktails, and non-alcoholic options.
For a weekend that skips downtown entirely, Elevated Times 2026 is hosted at Renton Memorial Stadium on August 1, and Seahawks Training Camp continues at Virginia Mason Athletic Center. The Carco Theatre also has The Jury Experience – The Deadly Boat Ride on Friday, August 7 at 6:00 p.m. if you want a smaller room.
Renton River Days, the city's flagship festival, has already come and gone for the summer, but the downtown momentum it built is what Legacy Square is now catching. Last year's celebration welcomed more than 25,000 attendees, which is the baseline the square's summer programming is being measured against.
Where To Eat Inside The Two-Block Radius
The food question used to have a short answer downtown. It is longer now, and the openings are dense enough that Yelp's reviewers have started using the shorthand "DTR" for downtown Renton.
Within a five-minute walk of Legacy Square:
- The Berliner — A German-style gastropub in downtown Renton, open seven days a week, Monday through Friday 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to midnight, kids welcome. This is where the city is running its official World Cup Draw watch party in December, which tells you where it sits in the downtown pecking order.
- Drum Roll Wine — Located at 911 S. Third Street, this is the winery inside downtown. The Chamber's foodie tour ends here often, and it hosts several of the Downtown Partnership's ticketed wine events.
- Luther's Table — A community-oriented spot that also hosts events like first-aid training on off-nights. Reliable for a full sit-down.
- New Zen Japanese Restaurant — At 509 South 3rd Street, Suite A, positioned directly across from Legacy Square. The address is the point. This is the closest table service to the event lawn.
- Rain City Market — Casual, quick. A worker there described downtown this summer as "probably the busiest that I've seen it. We get busier in the summertime, but now we're much busier."
If you are willing to leave the downtown core, the newer opening worth the drive is Shaah & Sheeko, a Somali cafe that started as a series of pop-ups and expanded into a permanent space at Renton's Cascade Village, with an opening menu of Somali teas and coffees, assorted sambusi, and thai tea tiramisu. It is the most distinctive food opening in Renton this year and it is not downtown.
A Sample Week If You Have Not Been Paying Attention
Pick a Tuesday. Shop the Farmers Market from 5 to 6:30. Walk one block to Legacy Square. If it is the second week of August, stay for Clinton Fearon on Saturday and grab dinner at New Zen or The Berliner on the way. Friday night, the movie is Lilo & Stitch and starts at 6. Sunday afternoon, catch whatever Summer Sundays event is on the schedule, then close out with Sunset Yoga.
That is five nights of programming inside two blocks, none of which existed in this format a year ago. The reason to know the schedule is that the block is going to keep filling up. With the inclusion of the new market, operations will be open seven days a week, compared to the periodic limited use before, which was about two to four events a week. The Renton Market building is still finishing, but when it opens, the ratio of programmed days to quiet days will invert.
For a while, downtown Renton was a place people drove through on the way to Southcenter or Bellevue. It is worth taking a Tuesday evening to see what the new block actually feels like before the rest of the region figures it out.
